WHAT IS CREATIVE EXPRESSION???

Creative Expression

Creative expression is exactly that—moments of creativity that allow individuals to convey raw emotions, feelings, or perceptions. It is not limited to drawing but encompasses painting, movement, music, and other forms of artistic expression. As Cathy A. Malchiodi states in The Art Therapy Sourcebook, "All of these activities are ways to soothe yourself, release stress and tension, give enjoyment and pleasure, and transcend troubling feelings." Whether through the colors chosen, the strokes of a brush, body movements, musical lyrics, or symbolic imagery, creative expression can provide profound insight into one's inner world.

WHAT IT ISN’T.

It is essential to understand that creative expression is not about perfection or producing aesthetically pleasing work. This concept can be challenging for those who have been conditioned to see art through a lens of technical skill and correctness. Many of us have been graded in art classes based on our ability to replicate images or create something visually appealing. We have observed artwork in museums and judged its value based on its perceived flawlessness. However, in a therapeutic setting, creative expression serves a different purpose. It is not about achieving perfection but about authenticity—allowing raw, unfiltered feelings to emerge. As Malchiodi explains, "...the emphasis is generally first on developing and expressing images that come from inside the person rather than those they see in the outside world." For many, letting go of the need for artistic skill in these exercises can be difficult. The idea that one is “not creative” or “not good at art” often stems from expectations about what art should be. However, in therapy, creative expression is an invitation to be unapologetically oneself, free from judgment. Engaging in creative activity can have tangible neurological benefits as well. Malchiodi notes, "Creative activity can actually increase brain levels of serotonin," underscoring its potential to enhance emotional well-being.

ITS PURPOSE/ EFFECTIVENESS

Art textbook

One of the reasons creative expression is so effective in therapy is because some emotions and experiences are difficult to articulate, even for the individual experiencing them. At times, our conscious awareness is limited, and tapping into the subconscious can provide clarity. Creative expression facilitates this process, helping individuals access deeper layers of thought and emotion. Malchiodi emphasizes this when she writes, "They are methods of self-expression that change your state of being and tap your intuitive and creative powers. "Beyond its therapeutic impact, creative expression is also a means of self-discovery. It can illuminate personal truths and offer insight into deeply held beliefs. Malchiodi captures this beautifully: "... art is also a way of knowing what we actually believe. "Incorporating creative expression into therapy offers individuals a powerful way to explore their emotions, tap into their subconscious, and ultimately foster healing. It is a reminder that therapy is not just about talking—it is also about experiencing, creating, and discovering new ways of understanding oneself.

So, get out there, start creating, and let your inner world take shape!
